If someone makes it to your Instagram profile, your bio needs to make a good impression. The Instagram bio has very limited space, so it’s important to make an impact quickly and concisely. Learn how to make the most of your bio with these tips.
Consider your goals
Before you try to write an Instagram bio, consider what you’re trying to accomplish. Is your goal to have visitors click the follow button? Or is it more important for them to click the link in your bio? Do you want visitors to scroll through and check out all of your posts? Consider what action you want them to take.

Your bio is the first chance to introduce yourself, so you need to make it clear who you are and what your Instagram is all about. Spend some time thinking about what goals you want to reach with your Instagram, and what your bio can accomplish.
Set your display name
Your Instagram handle is your username that appears on feeds, or your @username. At the top of your Instagram bio, however, is a display name that does not have to exactly match your Instagram handle. For example, our Instagram handle is @iamsocialbuddy, but our display name in our bio is Social Buddy.
For many people, their display name is simply their full name, or for businesses it might be the full name of your business. If you’re running a personal profile, you can also include your preferred pronouns in this space.
Consider what makes the most sense for your profile. Some profiles take advantage of the extra space here by including their name and title, like John Smith | Fitness Professional. The most important thing is that it’s clear who you are from the start!
Describe what your account is all about
Your bio is the first thing someone will read when they come to your profile, and it can make or break whether or not they stay on your page or hit the follow button. Make sure that your bio describes the kind of content you post about, what your business offers, or what kinds of problems you solve for people. It should be clear what your page is all about based on your bio!
For example, if you’re a food blogger and mom that shares mostly easy dinners, your bio might say “Quick and easy recipes for working moms”. If you’re a marketing agency in a specific niche, your bio might say “SEO advice for law firms”.
There’s more information you can share in your bio, but first and foremost, make it clear to visitors what kind of content they’ll find on your page.
Keep it short
Really, you have to keep it short because you only have 150 characters available in the description section of your Instagram bio. Just because you have 150 characters, however, doesn’t mean you need to use them all! If you can get your point across in fewer characters, then by all means keep it short and sweet.
Get straight to the point and share who you are while infusing some personality, but don’t make your bio one long, run on sentence. Some of the best bios opt for bullet points of quick information, or one succinct sentence describing themselves.
Use keywords
Consider what someone would search to find your content. If you share vegan recipes, that might be “vegan food” or “vegan recipes”. If you’re a marketing company, it might be “digital marketing agency”. Include the most relevant keywords in your bio – and more specifically, in your display name, as that will make them easier to find when someone searches for those words.
To be clear, you shouldn’t just stuff a ton of keywords in your bio. Instead, be careful about your word choice to include the most important keywords organically while also sharing a bit about yourself.
Add some personality
While your bio should be short and informative, it doesn’t have to be boring! Infuse your personality, or your brand’s personality in the bio. If your brand has a funny or goofy element, make that clear. If your brand is cool and trendy, let that shine through.
Add a link
Your bio is one of the only places on your Instagram profile that you can add clickable links, so make sure you take advantage of it. If you want to include multiple links, Instagram now allows up to 5 external links that helps visitors navigate through to several other pages easily.
If you have a website, your link in bio should include that website. If you’re promoting a certain product, link to that product. If your main focus is growing on social media, you could link to your other social media profiles.
Include contact information
If you want to be contacted, be sure to include your contact information!
For many people, this is most likely an email address or phone number for inquiries related to your business. If you’re promoting a brick and mortar business, include the address.
Use branded hashtags
If your brand has a hashtag, or if you want to encourage users to use a hashtag to share posts with you, add that in your bio! Some businesses use hashtags to collect user-generated content.
Avoid using generic hashtags, as they don’t make your profile more searchable and may waste precious space in your bio.
Add emojis for some color
Emojis can help improve your Instagram bio in a few ways. First, they can add color to your bio. They can also be used to break up text – some creators will use emojis as bullet points to add line items. They can also help convey more information or add creative flair.
Don’t forget a call to action
We mentioned your goals earlier – what do you want your Instagram bio to achieve? What action do you want someone to take after reading your bio?
It’s common practice to include a call to action in your bio, but we don’t recommend simply adding “Follow me!” Instead, try to be creative or specific with your CTA.
If you have a branded hashtag, your call to action could be asking users to share their own posts with that hashtag. If you have a link to shop, point users towards that link. You could also direct visitors to sign up for your newsletter at your link. Highlight whatever action best suits your goals, and if it is just to follow your Instagram page, try to ask in a creative and enticing way.
