- Open the TikTok app.
- Click the Inbox icon on the bottom of your screen.
- Click the box that has a pencil in it on the top right-hand corner of your screen.
- Select or type in the name of the person you want to send a direct message to.
- Write out your message and click the arrow next to your message to send.
TikTok doesn’t let you DM someone this way if you aren’t friends with one another. Do this instead if you want to send a direct message to someone who you aren’t friends with:
- Open the TikTok app.
- Click the magnifying glass icon in the top right-hand corner of your screen.
- Search for whoever you want to send a direct message to.
- Click on their profile.
- Tap the three dots in the top right-hand corner of your screen.
- Select the envelope icon that’s labeled as “Send message.”
- Write out your message and click the arrow next to your message to send.
How to Send TikTok Video as a Direct Message
If you found a funny TikTok that you want to share with a friend, you can also send them a direct message this way, too.
- Find the video you want to share with a friend.
- Click on the arrow icon located on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Under “Send to,” find the user you want to send the TikTok to.
- Optional: Write a message to go along with the video.
- Click “Send.”
Note: TikTok won’t let you send messages this way to anyone who you aren’t friends with. So, if you want to send someone a TikTok, the only way to successfully be able to is if you are following them and they are following you.
How to View Direct Messages on TikTok
Whether you send a direct message with just words or with a video, they will all be kept in the same place. To view your past direct messages on TikTok, follow these steps:
- Open the TikTok app.
- Click on the Inbox icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Under Messages is where all of your TikTok direct messages will be.
How to Delete Direct Messages on TikTok
If you want to get rid of some old direct messages on TikTok, all you have to do is swipe your finger across the screen, here’s how:
- Open the TikTok app.
- Click on the Inbox icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Find the user whose direct messages you want to delete.
- Swipe to the left, and click “Delete.”
You will also notice when you swipe to the left, two more options appear. Clicking “More” will allow you to either block or mute the user and clicking “Report” will allow you to report the user for whatever reason.
